IntelliProp Announces Expansion of its SATA Products with the SATA Port Multiplier
IntelliProp, Inc., a leading provider of industry proven storage products announced a significant expansion of its Serial ATA (SATA) portfolio with the introduction of its SATA Port Multiplier.
Port Multipliers, silicon based devices that allow a single SATA port to communicate with multiple drives, usually reside on the enclosures backplane and are transparent to the drives. The Port Multiplier’s value for the customer is in its cost-effective and expanded drive scalability to storage systems thereby assuring efficient add-on desktop storage. Without the Port Multiplier, the user is limited to the controller’s port count, but with the Port Multiplier a single host with a single SATA slot can connect up to 15 drives without performance degradation on a 3Gb/s line. Another advantage is that the SATA Port Multiplier uses a simplified cabling topology enabling a host connection to more drives with fewer cables.
The IntelliProp SATA Port Multiplier provides SATA compliant connections to a SATA host and up to 15 SATA devices. IntelliProp’s SATA Port Multiplier is available for application within the Xilinx and Altera FPGA families and contains the following additional features:
- The host and device connections are speed independent thus allowing for speed bridging on the SATA connection
- Automatically performs OOB signaling and speed negotiation
- Supports FIS-Based and Command-Based switching
- High performance and low power usage with no processor or firmware requirements
- Fully compliant to the SATA Gen-1 and Gen-2 industry specifications ant with port multiplier behavior as defined in the SATA 2.6 specification
IntelliProp is hard at work on advancing its technology in this area and is currently developing the SATA Port Multiplier with High Data Throughput. Stay posted for further information on IntelliProp’s evolving technology in this area.
About SATA
The IntelliProp SATA Port Multiplier supports the industry proven SATA interface. SATA, a computer bus standard that primarily transfers data between a motherboard and mass storage devices has several advantages over Parallel ATA which it replaces, including greater reliability, faster data transfer, hot swapping, and more efficient air cooling due to the thinness of the wires utilized. As a storage protocol, SATA is used as an interface to storage devices such as Personal Computers, JBODs, disk arrays, multifunction printers, set-top boxes, and any other appliance that might require data storage for any length of time.
About IntelliProp
IntelliProp, Inc., is a Colorado corporation that was formed in 1998 as an ASIC design and verification services company to serve the needs of the data storage Industry along the front range of Colorado. As IntelliProp’s founders had a great deal of experience with storage logic design for both HOST and DEVICE controllers, the company enjoyed great success in the area of storage design and verification. When the new transaction level verification movement began, IntelliProp developed an offering for verification intellectual property (IP) products. IntelliProp’s verification IP was recently wholly acquired by Cadence Design Systems.
With the combination of its expertise in the storage industry and its verification experience, IntelliProp began offering RTL storage interface cores. IntelliProp’s cores have been verified using a robust test environment and have been synthesized and tested in an FPGA system. IntelliProp continues to make significant inroads in the data storage arena and has several products slated for expansion in the immediate future.
