The IntelliProp IPP-NV186A-BR NVMe-to-SATA Bridge IP Core is a production-hardened platform engineered to bridge an NVM Express® (NVMe™) host controller directly to standard Serial ATA (SATA) target devices, including solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). By performing full, real-time hardware protocol translation between NVMe™ command structures and SATA FIS (Frame Information Structure) packets, the core enables legacy SATA storage media to connect to modern high-speed PCI Express® (PCIe®) root complexes without host software drivers or operating system modifications.
Architected with high-efficiency hardware state machines and an integrated command translation layer, the IPP-NV186A-BR offloads Submission Queue (SQ) parsing, Completion Queue (CQ) posting, and low-level SATA link state management entirely from the system CPU. This deterministic, hardware-driven approach minimizes latency and maintains maximum throughput across the SATA link.
Fully compliant with NVM Express® and Serial ATA specifications, the IPP-NV186A-BR provides an ideal solution for aerospace, defense, industrial automation, and enterprise storage systems transitioning to PCIe® architectures while preserving existing investments in SATA storage media across modern FPGA fabrics and custom ASICs.
Features
- Protocol Compliance: Fully compliant with standard NVM Express® (NVMe™) Revision 1.3/1.4 specifications and Serial ATA (SATA) 1.5 Gb/s, 3.0 Gb/s, and 6.0 Gb/s standards (SATA 3.3).
- Hardware Protocol Translation: Fully translates NVMe™ commands and Submission/Completion Queue entries into standard SATA FIS protocol sequences in hardware logic.
- CPU Offload Architecture: Manages entire NVMe™ target register interfaces and SATA host link layer state machines without host CPU intervention.
- Independent SATA Link Speed Negotiation: Automatically handles SATA physical speed negotiation (1.5 Gb/s, 3.0 Gb/s, or 6.0 Gb/s) and link training upon initialization.
- Hardware-Accelerated DMA: Features integrated Direct Memory Access (DMA) engines for ultra-low latency data movement between PCIe® system memory and SATA device buffers.
- Decoupled Clock Domains: High-efficiency asynchronous FIFO structures ensure seamless, glitch-free data transfers between PCIe® clock domains and SATA physical link clocks.
- Advanced Drive Feature Support: Full support for SATA NCQ (Native Command Queuing), power management states (Partial/Slumber), and drive status reporting.
- Synchronous Synthesizable RTL: Delivered as production-ready Verilog source code or netlist optimized for fast placement, routing, and timing closure on leading FPGA fabrics and ASICs.
Deliverables
- Production-Ready Maturity: Extensively verified using a coverage-driven methodology in pseudo-random simulation environments.
- Flexible Delivery: Fully synthesizable RTL optimized for clean timing closure across modern FPGA and custom ASIC architectures.
- 100% U.S.-Based Engineering: All design, technical integration, and post-sales support are handled directly by our primary engineering teams operating out of our Longmont, Colorado facilities.
- Defense-Industry Compliant: Development workflow and documentation adhere to standards required for U.S. defense, aerospace, and ITAR-controlled integration.
